Cabinet Minister:

A cabinet minister is a member of the executive branch of the government. The cabinet consists of many senior ministers. These honorable Ministers hold important portfolios such as home affairs, defence , education etc., The cabinet consists of most experienced Ministers. On important matters Prime Minister seeks their advice. The decisions taken by the cabinet are binding to all Ministers. The cabinet meets frequently to formulate the policies and decide on certain matters on national importance. The size of the cabinet is 15-20 Ministers.

How many types of ministers are there in Cabinet

There are five categories of Council of Ministers.

  • Prime Minister: Prime Minister is the leader of executive of the Government of India.
  • Deputy Prime Minister: He is the senior most Cabinet Minister. Presides as Prime Minister in his absence.
  • Cabinet Minister: He leads a Ministry. A member of the Cabinet.
  • Minister of State (Independent charge): He is a Junior Minister. He will not report to a Cabinet Minister.
  • Minister of State (MoS): Deputy Minister reporting to a Cabinet Minister with responsibility in that Ministry.

He is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party. He is a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha since 5 July 2019, representing Gujarat. He has previously served as the Foreign Secretary from January 2015 to January 2018.

He joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1977 and during his diplomatic career spanning over 38 years, he served in different capacities in India and abroad including as a High Comissioner to Singapore (2007–09) and as Ambassador to the Czech Republic (2001–04), China (2009–2013) and USA (2014–2015). Jaishankar played a key role in negotiating the Indo-US Civilian nuclear agreement.

Puri joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in January 2014, and became a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha from Uttar Pradesh in November, 2020.  Earlier in May 2019, he had taken charge as the Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Housing and Urban Affairs and Civil Aviation and Minister of State for Commerce and Industry.

Previously, Puri has served as the chairman of the United Nations Security Council’s Counter-Terrorism Committee from January 2011 to February 2013; and joined International Peace Institute as a senior advisor in June 2013.

Previously, Thakur served as a Minister of State for Finance and Corporate Affairs. He was first elected to the Lok Sabha in May 2008 in a by poll as a candidate of the Bharatiya Janata Party. Coming from a political family of Himachal Pradesh, he is a long serving, four time Member of Parliament, being a member of 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th Lok sabha.

Previously, he was the President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) from May 2015 to February 2017, and had to leave that position after the Supreme Court order on BCCI governance.. On July 29, 2016, he became the first serving Member of Parliament from the BJP to become a regular commissioned officer in the Territorial Army.

He was involved in a legal struggle between the Himachal Pradesh State Government and the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association over the rights to the International Cricket Stadium at Dharamshala. There was also controversy over his appointment as the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and he had to leave that position following a Supreme Court order.
