Girl Child Schemes in India
Gender discrimination has been a social evil since the society has begun. Most of the parents are not progressive, they just want a boy as a child, they are not ready to accept a girl. This imbalance creates a lot of problems. Some kill the girl child, after or before birth. There is not enough match up for a male, due to decreased sex ratio. This creates the problem of dowry. So, the Indian government has come up with schemes for eradicating this problem like they give money for the girl’s education. Many state governments have also provided many schemes. Let us see some most important of those and also how to apply for those online.

List of Government Schemes for Girl Child in India
1. Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao
Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) Scheme was launched by honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Panipat, Haryana, on January 22, 2015.
This program has garnered much national and international attention, and has been called the most ambitious social policy of India. The scheme provides financial assistance for families to raise girls, and has been touted as a potential solution to gender-based abortions in India.
Eligibility
- The girl child must be under ten years of age. under the age of ten.
- There must be a Sukanya Samriddhi Account (SSA) in any bank in India in the name of the girl child in any bank.
- The girl child must be a citizen of India. This scheme is not open to NRIs.
How to Apply for the Scheme?
- Visit any bank and open a Sukanya Samriddhi Account (SSA).
- To do so, take and fill the application form for SSA, obtained from the bank.
- The form has to be filled manually.
- Then, attach all the required documents with the form.
- Submit the documents.
2. CBSE Udaan Scheme
The Central Board of Secondary Education, in collaboration with the Ministry of Human Resource Development of the Government of India, supervises the CBSE Udaan scheme. The aim of this program is to increase the number of girls in top grade engineering and technical colleges across India.
The Primary Features of the Scheme are that it provides free course material and online resources for girls in 11th and 12th grades, such as weekend virtual courses. The scheme also includes career opportunities for deserving female students. The government also provides study assistance and clarification facilities via a toll-free number.
Eligibility:
- The girls who have secured an average of 70% in class 10 can opt for the scheme.
- The applicants must have secured at least 80% in Science and Mathematics.
- The girl must choose science stream in class 11.
- The minimum yearly income of the applicant’s family must be 6 lakh
How to Apply for the Scheme?
- Register on the official website of the CBSE Udaan Scheme.
- To register, the applicant will have to fill in an online application form that must be filled in with accurate details.
- Submit the application form, you will get a registration number that pops up on the monitor screen and will be sent to your registered email address.
- Then the applicant will have to upload her photograph, date of birth and registration number. Download the declaration form. Take advantage of the scheme!

3. Balika Samridhi Yojana
The Balika Samriddhi Yojana is a scholarship initiative that provides financial support to young girls and their families who live in poverty. In school, a girl child will earn an annual scholarship ranging from Rs. 300 to Rs. 1000.
Eligibility:
- The girl’s family need to be BPL(below poverty line)
- The girl child must be born on or after the 15th of August 1997.
- Two girl children from a family can attain the benefits of the scheme.
The girl will get all the funds from the scheme until she reaches the age of 18.
How to apply for the scheme?
- The application forms for the Balika Samriddhi Yojana are available with anganwadi workers and can be downloaded for free from the Women & Child Development Department’s website.
- After filling the form, submit it, where you got it. Now you enrolled in the scheme.
- For filling the form, documents like birth certificate of child and proof identity of her parents will be required.
4. Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana
Dowry and other marriage costs are being the reason for discrimination against girls. Under this scheme, Sukanya Samriddhi Account, a government-sponsored savings program for parents of girl children, is opened. The program helps parents to set aside money for their girl child for her educational and marriage expenses.
Eligibility:
- The girl child must be either 10 years of age or below the age.
How to apply for the scheme?
- Go to your nearest central bank, fill the form to open a Sukanya Samriddhi Account.
- Keep the birth certificate of the child and ID proof of the parents ready along with photographs.
- Pay the deposit amount between Rs. 250 and Rs. 1.5 lakh.
- You do set up automatic credit to an SSY Account through Net Banking.
5. National Scheme of Incentive for the Girls of Secondary Education
This is a pan-India scheme to help girls to pursue secondary education, run by the Department of School Education & Literacy, Human Resource Development Ministry, Government of India.
An eligible girl will receive Rs. 3000 as a fixed deposit under the scheme, which she can withdraw with interest after she reaches the age of 18 and has completed her 10th class.
Eligibility:
- The girl student must have passed class VIII and enrolled in class IX in State/ UT Government, Government-aided and Local Body schools and belonging to SC/ST communities.
- The girl child should be unmarried and below the age of 16.
How to apply for the scheme?
(i) To apply for NSIGSE, students must register themselves on National Scholarship Portal.
(ii) The applications will be verified online only.
(iii) Then, The Ministry of HRD will sanction funds and will order the banks to implement the Scheme.
(iv) The banks distribute the scholarships to students directly by electronic transfer into their bank accounts.
